The Non-Antique Restorer
Professional Focus and Expertise
As Conservator-Restorers, much like those featured on the BBC’s “Repair Shop”, each of us develops a distinct niche of expertise. My particular focus lies in the refinishing and restoration of high-quality Non-Antique wooden furniture. This includes high-end Reproduction pieces, Arts & Crafts designs, Mid-Century Modern classics, Contemporary works, Brand Name Designer items, and other collectable wooden furniture originating from the mid-20th century onwards. In essence, I am perhaps best described as a “Non-Antique Restorer”.
My Unique Approach
While traditional antique restorers aim to preserve the evidence of age and historical character, my practice is centred on returning furniture to an “as new” condition. My distinctive “Back to Bare Wood” process involves carefully dry stripping and reworking the wood to remove all marks, blemishes, and structural imperfections. Once this is achieved, I proceed to refinish each piece using professional materials and factory processes appropriate to its period and design, always following the maker’s original specifications and practices where possible.
Expectations and Outcomes
It is important to note that not every piece can be restored to look completely brand new again, but most can, and I will always guide your expectations on a piece-by-piece basis. What is certain is that the pieces leaving my workshop will have been skilfully transformed – by a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts – into some of the finest examples of their kind in existence today, accompanied by a corresponding enhancement in value, a restorer’s label and a set of Before-During-After photographs if requested.
